Tours through the park - Horse, bike and two hikes!

The Newberry Hill Heritage Park Stewardship Group will be leading public tours of the park covering equestrian, hiking and mountain-biking trails.

In response to a request from the public at Workshop 1, our Stewardship Group volunteers have organized tours of the park.  The tours will take place rain or shine, so come prepared for the weather.

Here’s the schedule:

Horseback tour:  Equestrian style!
Saturday Jan. 16, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM optional lunch, RSVP required (see flyer)
Ride is limited to 12 participants. Participants must bring their own horse and tack.  If you are interested in participating in lunch after the ride, bring your own lawn chair. Coffee, cookies, and chili will be provided!

Where to meet:
Meet at 5125 Gross Road approximately 1 mile west on Gross Road from Seabeck Highway.
There is adequate parking for horse trailers. Arrive at our meeting location at 10:00 am and be saddled and ready to hit the trail at 11:00AM with ride leaders Gail Rase and Jean Young. This ride is for experienced horseback riders. A short portion of the ride will be along a road and crossing Seabeck Highway, so your horse must be accustomed to riding on a roadway as well as dirt trails. We will explore the trails of Newberry Hill Heritage Park. Our ride will take us through various terrains and around a wetland area that are head waters for Chico Creek. Gail will explain some of the history of the property and identify some of the abundant wildlife you will see.

Bike tour: Overall view of the park
Saturday Jan. 23 10:00 am – 12:00 noon

Where to meet:
Meet at the entrance to Klahowya School by the large white “K”. Parking is limited, so please carpool.
Join park stewardship members, Mike Wellborn and Dave Leenstra on this easy bicycle tour of Newberry Hill Heritage Park. We will explore a little over five miles of trails to get an overall picture of the Park. Expect to see beautiful views and possibly some wildlife as you pedal your way through the north and south ends of the park. Bicyclists must wear helmets and bikes must be in good condition. Participants must be very familiar with the operation of gears and brakes. Bike gloves are very helpful for warmth as well as safety. Bring water and a snack.

Hike 1: Northern Section
Wednesday Jan. 27 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Where to meet:
The entrance to Klahowya School by the large white “K”. Parking is limited, so please carpool. Join park stewardship member, Wade Larson, and park staff member, Lori Raymaker on this easy weekday afternoon stroll through the northern part of Newberry Hill Heritage Park. We will explore a little over two miles of trails while watching for wildlife as we circle around a wetland area.  Bring binoculars if you have them.

Hike 2: Southern Section & Chico Creek
Saturday Jan. 30, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon

Where to meet:
Meet at the gate off of Seabeck Highway, just north of Holly Road. Parking is very limited, so please carpool. Join park stewardship members and park neighbors, Joanne and Colon Corey for this easy morning hike through the southern potion of Newberry Hill Heritage Park. We will explore two to three miles of trails while watching for wildlife. This hike will showcase the northern headwaters of the Chico Creek watershed. Bring binoculars if you have them. Also bring water and a snack.
